Volume 1 - The Act

It's a rare thing when one of mentalism's leading minds divulges the secrets to his professional act - the material he's been earning a living with for decades. Yet, on this volume of an extraordinary video series, that's exactly what Richard Osterlind does - sharing not only the methods, but the fine details, of the powerhouse effects he's been wowing corporate and trade show audiences all over the world with. Watch him amaze the audience in performance and then go behind the scenes as Osterlind, along with host Jim Sisti, shows you how it's all done.

RICHARD OSTERLIND’S GUIDE BOOKS for the MIND MYSTERIES DVD SERIES, Volume 1. Perhaps, like me, you have watched a magician or mentalist perform his best work and have wondered just how the routine was developed, why the magician did one thing and not another, and perhaps where the lines came from. This is especially true if you watch the performer on video, where you can see the routine performed over and over again. One of the more successful DVD sets to come out in recent years is Richard Osterlind’s “Mind Mysteries.” It has been a best seller and is filled with excellent material taken from Richard’s professional career. Richard has done a remarkable thing – he has written companion books for the first two videos (probably more to come) that anticipate many of those questions and give us insights into how his routines were developed. The books are of little use if you don’t have the videos, because no methods are given. Rather, Richard refers to the video as he discusses why he did what he did, said what he said, and even why the audience responded as it did. I have never seen this done before and I think it is terrific. There is no way to review the detail in these books. Instead, let me give you a few examples. In the first DVD Richard presents a shortened version of his act. That is, he performs all the routines but in a shortened version, since his show usually runs an hour. In the accompanying book he explains why he does what he does and notes what he would do differently in the full show. For each routine he gives a short history of how he developed the routine and a detailed analysis of the routine. In his analysis for Bank Night he writes, “I try to keep total control during the entire routine. Whenever I do this effect I know almost exactly what is going to happen at every step even though you might think the audience’s reactions would play a large part in how it plays out.” Then he goes on to show why he knows what will happen. Later, in the analysis of the “Perfected Center Tear,” he explains how he controls the eyes of the audience so he can get his peek without being detected. And, in discussing his “Radar Deck” routine he writes, “If you look carefully at the routine on the video you will see that I cancel out up front a number of possible problem areas before I even begin.” This is the kind of “extra information” that is invaluable to the performer.
